Bat Removal in California, MD

Inspection-Led Bat Control for California, MD Homes

Bat control starts with determining how the animals enter the structure and where they may be roosting. At Mike's Pest and Termite Control, we begin with a complimentary inspection to identify potential entry sites, assess conditions, and determine the appropriate next steps for humane removal.

We use humane, reduced-risk wildlife control methods and draw on more than 25 years of pest control experience serving California, MD and Southern Maryland. Same-day wildlife removal and emergency service are available throughout Southern Maryland as manpower allows. We also explain the Maryland wildlife requirements that may affect the timing and scope of the work.

Signs of Bats in Attics, Walls & Other Areas

Bats may occupy attics, crawl spaces, wall voids, and spaces around insulation without being visible during the day. Outdoors, they may roost in trees, barns, sheds, and other outbuildings. An inspection is a reliable way to determine whether observed signs are connected to bats and where activity is occurring.

The big brown bat is the species most commonly found roosting in Maryland attics and wall voids. It remains in Maryland year-round, so signs of activity aren’t limited to warm-weather migration periods.

Signs that warrant an inspection include:

  • Dusk activity: Bats entering or leaving around dusk may be using small gaps along the roofline, vents, chimneys, or other exterior openings.
  • Droppings: Bat guano may accumulate beneath a roost in an attic, wall void, or another sheltered area.
  • Unusual sounds: Scratching, chirping, or fluttering from an attic or wall near dusk or dawn can indicate animal activity.
  • Indoor sightings: A bat in a living area may have entered from a concealed part of the structure, although a professional inspection is needed to assess the circumstances.

Maryland Bat Exclusion Rules & Seasonal Restrictions

All native bat species are protected throughout Maryland. Nuisance colonies must be addressed through humane exclusion rather than by killing, trapping, or harming the bats. This process allows bats to leave a structure while preventing their return once the applicable timing and legal requirements have been addressed.

Maryland Department of Natural Resources rules restrict exclusion of colonies containing more than 10 adult bats from March 1 through August 31 unless prior approval is obtained from the Wildlife and Heritage Service. This restriction covers the maternity period, when flightless pups may remain in a roost and be unable to follow adult bats outside.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources recommends performing exclusion and entrance sealing from September 1 through March 1 to avoid separating mothers from their pups. Paid bat exclusion work in Maryland also requires a Wildlife Damage Control Operator permit and a bat informational affidavit. We advise customers about these requirements when planning lawful bat removal in California, MD.

Our Inspection & Exclusion Planning Process

The complimentary inspection identifies potential entry points and areas the bats may use to roost. We assess site conditions before recommending a course of action. Because those findings determine the scope and cost of the work, pricing can’t be established accurately without examining the property.

Entry-Site Assessment

We inspect openings associated with bat activity and consider how the animals move into and through the structure. Roofline gaps, vents, chimneys, and concealed structural openings may require attention depending on the findings. We document these conditions before planning exclusion work.

Lawful Exclusion Planning

After evaluating the entry and roosting areas, we develop a humane, reduced-risk wildlife control plan that accounts for Maryland wildlife guidance. Exclusion allows bats to leave without permitting re-entry. The timing must account for colony size, maternity-season restrictions, and any approval requirements that apply.

Entrance Sealing & Prevention Guidance

Entrance sealing follows the exclusion plan so bats aren’t trapped inside the structure. Depending on the conditions identified, prevention measures may include sealing entry points and screening vents. We explain each recommendation based on what the inspection reveals rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

Health Concerns from Bats & Bat Guano

Bats can carry rabies, so direct contact should be avoided. If a bat is found in a living space or a person or pet may have had direct contact with one, seek prompt guidance from the appropriate public health or animal health authority. We don’t recommend attempting do-it-yourself removal.

Bat droppings can spread illnesses such as histoplasmosis, an infection associated with inhaling fungal spores from contaminated material. Disturbing accumulated guano can create exposure concerns, so the affected area should be assessed before cleanup begins. Bats may also occupy concealed areas that are difficult to inspect safely without professional equipment and experience.

Professional handling reduces unnecessary contact with bats and areas containing droppings. It also helps homeowners avoid flea or mite transfer and other pests associated with an animal roost.
