When Do Wasp Nests Reach Their Peak Size in Southern Maryland

If you’ve noticed more wasp activity around your deck, eaves, or backyard over the past few weeks, you’re not imagining it. Wasp colonies grow slowly through spring and then accelerate sharply in midsummer, which means what looked manageable in June can become a genuine problem by September. After more than 25 years serving Waldorf and Charles County, we’ve watched this pattern repeat every season, and we know how Southern Maryland’s Coastal Plain climate shapes it in ways that differ from the rest of the state.

The timing question matters more than most homeowners realize. A nest you find in July is still in its growth phase. Whether you’re dealing with a few paper wasps under the porch or a yellowjacket colony in a wall void, the colony one month from now will look nothing like it does today.

How Wasp Nests Grow from Spring Through Summer

Every wasp colony starts the same way: a single queen who survived the winter finds a sheltered location and begins building alone. On Maryland’s Coastal Plain, which includes Charles County and Waldorf, queens emerge and start this process one to two weeks earlier in spring than their counterparts in western or mountain Maryland, where temperatures lag behind. That head start matters because the entire colony timeline shifts forward accordingly.

In April or May, the nest is roughly golf-ball-sized, with the queen laying the first eggs and doing all the construction herself. Four to six weeks later, the first generation of workers emerges and everything changes. Workers take over foraging and building, freeing the queen to focus entirely on egg production. Growth shifts from linear to exponential. By July, a nest that was baseball-sized a few weeks earlier can reach football size or larger. It’s still growing.

When Southern Maryland Nests Hit Their Peak

For most wasp species in Southern Maryland, peak colony size falls in August and September. Paper wasp colonies top out at 20 to 75 workers, while bald-faced hornet nests reach 100 to 400 workers at maximum, according to University of Maryland Extension data. Eastern and Southern yellowjacket colonies are in a different category entirely, often reaching several thousand workers by late summer.

The Southern yellowjacket, documented in Charles County and other Southern Maryland counties along the Coastal Plain, deserves particular attention. In cooler parts of the state, yellowjacket colonies die back predictably after the first hard frost. In warmer coastal climates, Southern yellowjacket colonies can sustain themselves longer into fall and, in some conditions, may trend toward perennial behavior where the colony doesn’t fully collapse at season’s end. The mild, humid summers here produce conditions that other Maryland regions simply don’t experience.

At peak population, worker behavior shifts as well. Earlier in the season, wasps forage primarily for protein to feed developing larvae. By late summer, larval production slows and workers shift toward sugary food sources. This is why encounters near cookouts, trash cans, and picnic tables spike in August and September. More workers, less purpose, and more aggression is the combination that makes late-season nests so dangerous to disturb.

Why July Is the Most Important Month to Act

A nest found in July is still in active, rapid growth. Waiting until August or September means confronting a colony that may be 10 to 100 times larger and significantly more defensive than it is right now. That’s not a figure of speech. Yellowjacket populations can grow by thousands of workers over a six-week stretch during peak season.

Disturbing a nest accidentally makes the situation worse fast. Wasp colonies release alarm pheromones when they detect vibrations or a perceived threat, triggering an immediate coordinated defensive response. Lawn mowers, foot traffic near a ground entrance, even a weed trimmer passing too close to a wall cavity can set this off. The larger the colony, the larger the reaction.

Nests inside sheltered voids are common in Southern Maryland homes because our summers give colonies a longer window to establish in protected spaces. Wall cavities, soffits, attic edges, and the framing beneath decks all provide ideal conditions. These nests are invisible from outside and continue growing through August while homeowners remain unaware of what’s developing inside the structure.

Species Found in Southern Maryland & What Their Nests Look Like

Paper Wasps
Paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped nests with visible hexagonal cells, typically hanging from eaves, porch ceilings, deck railings, and window frames. Colonies are small relative to yellowjackets, but paper wasps will sting repeatedly when they feel threatened.

Eastern & Southern Yellowjackets
Yellowjackets nest underground or inside wall voids, entering through a small hole that’s easy to miss until you notice the flight pattern. The nest itself is enclosed in a papery envelope and can reach basketball size or larger by late summer. These are the species most likely to produce mass-stinging incidents when disturbed.

Bald-Faced Hornets
Bald-faced hornets build large, gray, oval aerial nests in trees, shrubs, and occasionally under roof overhangs. These colonies defend aggressively from a significant distance around the nest.

Mud Daubers & Cicada Killers
Mud daubers build small tube-shaped mud nests on walls and in corners; they’re solitary and rarely sting. Cicada killers are large and look alarming but aren’t aggressive toward people unless handled directly. Neither requires the same treatment approach as social wasp species.

Species identification shapes the removal decision. A paper wasp nest under a low-traffic eave found early in the season is a different situation from a yellowjacket colony in a wall void discovered in August. Hornets and yellowjackets near any high-traffic area warrant professional treatment regardless of current nest size.

What to Do If You Find a Nest Now

The most important rule is also the least intuitive: don’t spray a nest located near a wall entry point or underground entrance without a professional assessment first. Treating from the outside often doesn’t reach the colony, and in wall voids it can drive the colony deeper into the structure rather than addressing it.

If you’ve spotted wasp activity near your home, watch for a flight line. Individual wasps returning repeatedly to the same point on a wall, under a soffit, or into the ground trace directly back to the nest and tell you what you’re dealing with before you get close enough to trigger a response.

Acting in July rather than waiting until August or September makes the biggest difference in both safety and treatment complexity. A smaller colony is easier to address completely, less likely to produce a defensive mass response, and less likely to have caused structural complications inside a wall or ceiling cavity.
